  • Nothing that needs adjusting. If a top rides up or a waistband needs pulling, it will not get worn.

New-parent dressing has one requirement above all others: it has to survive being washed constantly and be put on without thinking.

Everything must be machine washable

This is not negotiable. Anything requiring care will be worn once and then avoided.

Dark and mid-tones, not white

The laundry volume is already extreme. Choosing colours that hide marks is the difference between three loads a week and six.

Nothing that needs adjusting

If a top rides up or a waistband needs pulling, it will not get worn. Both hands are usually occupied.

Where to focus

Where to focus

  • 5 tops that survive a 40°C wash
  • 2 pairs of trousers with a soft waistband
  • 1 cardigan with pockets
  • 1 coat you can feed or carry in
  • Shoes you can put on without hands
  • Nothing white, nothing dry clean only

Frequently asked questions

How many clothes do new parents need?

Fewer pieces but more of each — the wash cycle is what dictates the number. Five tops in rotation beats ten different ones.

Should I buy a new size?

Buy a small number of pieces that fit comfortably now. Waiting to fit into old clothes means a year of dressing badly.
