How to Pack for a Week in a Carry-On

A week in hand luggage is a combination problem, not a compression problem. Four tops and three bottoms in one palette give twelve outfits and fit comfortably.

In short

  • Choose bottoms first. They are the bulkiest items and they constrain everything else.
  • Wear the heaviest items. Boots and the bulkiest jacket travel on your body.
  • Roll soft, fold structured. Rolling suits jersey and knitwear; folding along existing seams suits shirts and tailoring.

A week in hand luggage is a combination problem, not a compression problem. Four tops and three bottoms in one palette give twelve outfits and fit comfortably.

Choose bottoms first

They are the bulkiest items and they constrain everything else. Pick two, then choose only tops that work with both.

Wear the heaviest items

Boots and the bulkiest jacket travel on your body. That is usually 30% of the volume gone.

Roll soft, fold structured

Rolling suits jersey and knitwear; folding along existing seams suits shirts and tailoring. Doing the wrong one to either creates creases.

A seven-day carry-on list

A seven-day carry-on list

  • 4 tops
  • 2 pairs of trousers
  • 1 smart option for evenings
  • 1 layer
  • 1 packable waterproof
  • 7 sets of underwear and socks
  • 1 pair of shoes packed, 1 worn
  • Toiletries under 100ml each
  • A laundry bag to separate worn from clean

Frequently asked questions

How many outfits can I get from a carry-on?

Twelve or more, if everything shares a palette. Four tops times three bottoms is the arithmetic.

Should I use packing cubes?

They help with organisation more than compression. The volume saving is small; the not-unpacking-everything-to-find-a-sock saving is large.
