Winter packing is the one case where the bulkiest items should mostly be worn rather than packed, because they will not fit otherwise.
Wear the coat and the boots
They are half the volume of a winter trip. Travelling in them is the difference between one bag and two.
Base layers replace bulk
Two thin merino layers weigh less and pack smaller than one heavy jumper, and regulate far better.
Plan for wet as well as cold
Snow melts. Waterproof outer layers and spare socks matter more than an extra jumper.
