Cost per wear is the price of a garment divided by the number of times you wear it. It is the most useful number in wardrobe planning and the most frequently misused, because everything depends on a wear count that people are consistently bad at estimating.
The formula
Cost per wear = (price + upkeep) ÷ times worn
A $200 wool coat worn 100 times over four winters, with $20 of dry cleaning, costs $2.20 per wear. A $60 occasion dress worn twice costs $30 per wear — fifteen times more, despite costing a third as much.

Cost per wear is a comparison tool, not an accounting one. It is most useful when weighing two specific options against each other — this coat against that coat — rather than as an absolute verdict on a purchase.
Why it changes decisions
The useful property of cost per wear is that it converts price, which is visible at the moment of purchase, into value, which is not. The garment that looks expensive on the tag is frequently the cheaper one to own.

Where it misleads
Three failure modes are worth naming, because the number is easy to use badly.
It ignores whether you needed the thing. A garment with an excellent cost per wear that displaced something you already owned has not saved you anything.
It penalises genuine occasion wear unfairly. A wedding outfit worn twice will always look terrible by this measure. That does not make it the wrong purchase — it makes cost per wear the wrong tool for that decision.
It assumes the garment survives. A cheap coat with a projected 100 wears that falls apart at 30 did not cost what the calculation said. Construction quality is what turns an estimate into an outcome.
Realistic wear counts
The estimate is the whole ballgame. These ranges come from how often the categories are actually worn over a garment's life, not how often people expect to wear them.

Using it well
Cost per wear works best as a comparison between two specific options you are actually choosing between — this coat or that coat — rather than as a pass/fail test on a single purchase.
Before buying
- Name the garment this would replace or sit alongside.
- Work out how many times you wore that one in the last year.
- Use that number, not an aspirational one.
- Add up the upkeep across the garment life, including cleaning.
- Compare against the alternative you are weighing, including doing nothing.
- If the two are close, the cheaper one wins — the estimate is not precise enough to split hairs.
What it looks like over time
The number only becomes real once you track wears. A cost per wear calculated at the till is a forecast; one calculated after two years is a fact, and the gap between them is the most useful thing a wardrobe can tell you about how you shop.
